11.1 - Climate and Biomes Flashcards
What are the two main factors that determine the climate of a region?
Temperature and precipitation.
How does altitude affect temperature?
As you climb higher, the temperature decreases. This is because solar energy warms the ground, not the air.
What is a climatograph?
A climatograph is a graph representing climate data for a specific region and time period. The data represented is temperature and precipitation.
How might humidity influence the type of organisms found in a region?
Humidity is the amount of water in the air. When humidity is low, organisms can dry out and die. For example, each year many trees in Alberta die during the winter when warm, dry chinook winds reduce the percent humidity in the air.
What is a biome?
A biome is a large geographic region that has a similar climate and forms of life.
Order the following: habitat, biome, biosphere and ecosystem
Biosphere — biome — ecosystem — habitat
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a smaller geographic region that describes interactions between biotic and abiotic factors.
What is a habitat?
A habitat is a small region that describes the place an organism lives or is usually found.
