The Gulf Stream is a large surface current that starts in the Caribbean and follows the eastern coastline of North America, curving past Newfoundland and ending up in the British isles where it is called the North Atlantic drift.

When El Niño occurs, the prevailing winds in the pacific reverse direction and blow warm pacific air and water east towards South America.
