Q

Grandfather-father-son rule of backups

A

Grandfather-father-son backup (GFS) is a common rotation scheme for backup media, in which there are three or more backup cycles, such as daily, weekly and monthly. The daily backups are rotated on a 3-months basis using a FIFO system as above.

Typical small business setup:
- “son” backups would be labelled Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
- Seven days later they are overwritten
- Each Friday is a “father” backup
- There will always be 4-5 father backups which are overwritten a month later
- grandfather backups happen once a month
- grandfather backups wont be overwritten for a year
