11 The Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
What are the adrenergic neurons, and what do they produce?
Adrenergic neurons secrete the neurotransmitter norepinephrine.
Decribe in general terms, the function of the parasympathetic nervous system.
The parasympathetic system generally promotes reactions that restore and conserve energy in the body. Rest and Digest. SLUDD: salivation, lacrimation, urination, digestion, defecation.
Give 2 reasons why the effects of the activation of the sympathetic divisions are longer lasting and more widespread than those of the parasympathetic division:
Norepinephrine is slowly metabolized after release. And it may enter the bloodstream.
The adrenal medulla is stimulated by:
Sympathetic preganglionic neurons.
Liver splits glycogen to glucose is a characteristic of what nervous system?
Sympathetic
What percentage of the catecholamine hormones released by the adrenal medullae is norepinephrine?
20%
The efferent (output) of the ANS has 2 principal divisions:
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Cell bodies of __ preganglionic neurons are located in the grey matter in the 12 thoracic and first 2 or 3 lumbar segments of the spinal cord.
sympathetic
Cell bodies of the __ preganglionic neurons are located in brain stem nuclei and in the gray matter in the second through fourth sacral segments of the spinal cord.
parasympathetic
