1.1 (Reproduction in Prokaryotes, Protists, and Fungi) (part 4) Flashcards
What is binary fission?
a process where a parent organism equally divides and produces 2 new cells.
What is multiple fission?
a process where a parent organism equally divides and produces multiple daughter cells.
What is plasmotomy?
Multinucleated protists produce multinucleated offsprings only through cytoplasmic divisions and NOT nuclear divisions
What is spore formation?
The formation of spores with protective capsules. Each spore eventually germinates and produces a new individual.
What is budding?
The development of a small outgrowth and its separation from a parent organism
What is syngamy?
the complete fusion of gametes that result to a diploid zygote
What is isogamy?
the fusing of 2 similar gametes
What is anisogamy?
the fusing of 2 dissimilar gametes
What is oogamy?
large non-motile gametes fertilized by smaller motile gametes
What is conjugation?
Temporary union of 2 individuals to exchange haploid pronuclear materials to form a zygote nucleus. Each individual with a zygote nucleus undergoes binary fission
