11 - Nominative Case Flashcards
There are four cases in German. Cases show the role that nouns play in a sentence. The articles der, die, das (the} and ein, eine, ein (a(n)) change according to the case.

The nominative case of the article is the form you find in the dictionary. der Tisch (m.) die Katze (f.) das Buch (n.)

The nominative case shows the subject of the sentence. The subject is the person or thing that does the action of the verb.

Der Mann trlnkt ein Bier.
The man is drinking a beer.

Die Frau schreibt eine Geburtstagskarte.
The woman is writing a birthday card.

Das Kind isst den Keks.
The child is eating the biscuit.
If you want to say “a” rather than “the”, you use ein, eine or ein in German.
Ein Mann arbeitet im Buro.
Eine Frau kauft eine Jacke.
Ein Mann arbeitet im Buro. (A man is working in the office.)
Eine Frau kauft eine Jacke. (A woman is buying a jacket.)
The subject is not always at the beginning of the sentence.
Nach der Schule geht das Madchen nach Hause.
After school the girl goes home.
