• over half the population is in poverty so they are more vulnerability
• the countries infrastructure was damaged - roads (inaccessible), water (diseases)
• buildings weren’t built to withstand earthquakes so they collapsed
• over 100 aftershocks - more damage, deaths and rescue was made more difficult
• landslides occurred
• emergency services were unable to cope and international aid was relied upon - in debt
• tourism decreased put people out of work
