Q

What is mass spectrometer for

A

To determine:

Relative atomic mass (Ar) of an element

  • Relative molecular mass (Mr) of a compound
  • Types of isotopes that are found in the naturally occurring element

including the abundance of the isotopes and

its relative isotopic mass.

• The structure of the compound in an unknown sample.

Q

What can i get from a mass spectrum?

Describe what i can get from the graph

A

Y-axis

Relative abundance (percentage)

X axis

The mass or charge ratio (m/e)

 x-axis indicates the mass/charge ratio (m/e), which equals the mass divided by +1, for unipositive ions detected by spectrometer.
 The m/e values are measured to identify the masses of different isotopes of an element.

Q

How to fimnd percentage abundance

A

Percentage abundance
= relative intensity/£mass
^ idk the context but prollly wrong

Subtitute with x and y
^use this instead
