What is: Prosody

A

The part of speech that is not syllabels or phonemes, but rather the other components like stress, tempo and so on.

Good-enough processing

A

Says that constraint satisfaction model and garden path models are too strong, and that readers or listeners will create interpretations based on available information, even though it might not be complete.

Examples:
The boy watched the bartender serve cocktails
The boy saw the person liked the cocktails
The boy who watched the bartender served the cocktails
While Anna dressed the baby played in the crib.

People will, under time pressure, interpret sentence number 3 and 4 wrong. 4 is a garden path sentence and is subject to late closure.

Stress shift

A

A phenomenon in english in which the stress in a sentence is moved away if it comes closer to another stressed syllable.

Ex.:
Hong ‘Kong
‘Hong Kong ‘problems
