He tried to achieve a return to normalcy (this was returning to pre war life) (1921)

  • post WW1 there was an short sharp economic depression where unemployment rose from 950,000 to 5,010,000 in 1921
  • there was general social discontent, riots, unemployment and strikes.
  • Warren Harding wanted to achieve normalcy by:
    1) Reducing taxes which had been high in the war
    2) less government in business and more business in government
    3) he introduced tariffs
    4) he opened a committee to tackle the race discrimination question.

  • Harding suggested that America should be “supportive of other nations but not entangled with them”
    They did this by:
    1)Not joining the league of the nations.
    2)Not setting up or joining colonies
    3) Allowing less immigrants in (immigrant quotas)
    4) introducing tariffs on foreign goods that encouraged people to “buy American” .
    5) neutrality act passed that restricted the help America could give if they went to war

1924- decreased to 150,000 with quotas from each country.

-he was viewed as corrupt because he gave positions to friends who were corrupt which made his administration look corrupt.
