stage 1: what is the first reading
bill proposed as initial report to trigger discussion, followed by a vote
stage 2: what is the second reading
main principles of the bill are debated in HOC
stage 3: what is the committee stage
bill is looked at in detail by a small committee of MPS and reported back to HOC
stage 4: what is the report stage
MPS chance to look at committee report and amendments are voted on
stage 5: what is the third reading
final chance for HOC to debate bills contents
stage 6: what is the HOL (lords) stage
same stages as HOC but in HOL, amendments can be made but it will be sent back to HOC for accept / reject and will have final say
stage 7: what is the royal assent stage
once bill passed by both houses and is signed by the monarch, the bill becomes law and is placed into force immediately
