something that is usual, typical and standard
what is the definition of a value?
society’s shared beliefs about what is good or bad and how people should act
what is a moral code?
set of principles or guidelines that a person or group of people follow in order to live a good life
what is the definition of deviance?
behaviour hat doesn’t follow social normalities
what is an example of a written moral code?
police code of ethics
what are the 3 types of deviance?
unusual and bad
unusual and good
unusual and bizarre
what are formal sanctions?
imposed by official bodies such as the police
what are informal sanctions?
imposed by individual people for rules that are not formally written
what are positive sanctions?
rewards for behaviour that society approves of
what is social control?
all sanctions, ways which society seeks to control our behaviour
what are the 2 definitions of criminal behaviour?
social definition and legal defence
what is the legal definition of criminal behaviour?
a crime must have an actus reus and a mens rea which is to commit the act and have the intention to commit the act
what is the social definition of criminal behaviour?
defines harmful acts a crime, not all crimes are harmful and not all harmful acts are criminal
what is strict liability?
the crime doesn’t always need the mens rea, negligence
what is self defence?
this can be used as a defence if the reasonable amount of force is used
