What are CV changes with obesity?
Adipose deposits increase inflammation in the arteries that contributes to plaque deposits
What are pulmonary changes with obesity?
- Obesity hypoventilation syndrome
- Hypoxemia
- Pulmonary vascular resistance
- Impaired cough due to diaphragm position
What is obesity hypoventilation syndrome?
Less inspiratory capacity because adipose tissue compresses the thoracic cage and diaphragm
What are frequent comorbidities with obesity?
CAD, DM, HTN, CHF

Waist to hip ratio

What should you be mindful of with post bariatric surgery mobility?
Severe decrease in calories can have an effect on endurance and strength
What pulmonary interventions are indicated following bariatric surgery?
- Deep breathing and cough
- Wean off O2
- Splinting for pain with coughing
Describe exercise parameters in the outpatient or subacute setting for bariatrics?
- 12-13 Borg
- 3-4 days/week aerobic
- 2-3 days/week resistance
- 30-40 minutes initially
