10A - Pressure and Gases Flashcards
Def: What is is pressure? What is Gas Pressure? What is the generic formula?
Gas pressure is the force of collisions that take place btw gas particles and an object.
P = F/A
Def: Define Atmospheric Pressure?
Pressure exerted by the mass of air above the earth in the atmosphere.
Theory: What is the standard atmospheric pressure in atm. What is the relationship between atmosphere and mmHg.
1 atm.
1 atm = 760 mmHg.
Theory: What is the relationship btw Torr and mmHg.
1 Torr = 1 mmHg.
Def: What is SI unit of pressure.
1 Pa = 1 N/m^2 = 1 kg/m*s^2
Theory: What is the relationship between bar, kPa, and atm.
1.01325 bar = 101325 kPa = 1 atm
Theory: Why can pressure be measure in mmHg?
atm pushes Hg up tube. When weight of Hg balances atm pressure, we get 1 atm = 760 mmHg.
Def: What is STP and SATP/RTP?
STP: 1 bar, 273.15 K (0 C)
SATP: 1 bar, 298.15 K (25 C)
Theory: What are the five properties of gases?
- Expand to fill container volume.
- Highly compressible.
- No phase separation in mixtures due to weak interactions between molecules.
- At RTP, gaseous substances can be molecular or molecules.
- Varying physical properties, including odor color and toxicity.
