1.07 - Introduction to Pharmacology of the Skin Flashcards
What is important about occlusive dressings
Occlusive dressings increase the absorption and effectiveness of topical therapy. Most common are polyethylene films (transparent)
What is significant about intertriginous areas regarding drug absorption
Describes an area where two skin areas may tough or rub together, tend to be moister/thinner skin and therefore have enhanced percutaneous absorption.
Solvent thickened with polymers, used for drying and in hairy areas.
Gel
Used for LARGE hairy areas and intertriginous areas (prone to occlusion)
Lotion
A semi-solid preparations of hydrocarbons with strong emollient effect. Contains no water and does not require a preservative.
Ointment
Large proportion of solids, allows for breathability of the skin.
Paste
Protects the skin from irritation and friction, drying effect and impart a cooling sensation via absorbing secretions.
Powder
