10.5 Types of Variation Flashcards
interspecific variation
differences between members of different species
intraspecific variation
differences between organisms within a species
Genetic causes of variation
- Alleles
- Mutations
- Meiosis
- Sexual Reproduction
- Chance- many different gametes are produced from the parental genome, as to which two combine during sex is by chance (random fertilisation)
Asexual reproduction
Leads to the production of clones that are genetically identical to their parents, so variation is much less like than with sexual reproduction. The only cause is mutation.
An example of something only determined by genetic variation
Blood Type
Environmental causes of variation
Plants more effected than animals due to their lack of mobility
Example: scars
Both
In most cases variation is a combination for example height, skin colour.
Due to this, it is difficult to investigate and draw conclusions about the causes of variation in any particular case. eg. Intelligence??
