10.1 classification Flashcards
1
Q
Classification systems
A
- the process where organisms are suited into groups based on similar features/characteristics
- taxonomic groups-KPCOFGS
- Kingdom- biggest and broadests
- species- smallest and most specific
2
Q
Reasons for classification
A
- to identify species
- to predict characteristics
- to find evolutionary links
UNIVERSAL
3
Q
How are organsims classified
A
- As you move down the hierarchy there are more groups at each level but fewer organisms in each group. They become more similar and share more of the same characteristics
- species: a group of organisms able to reproduced to produce fertile offspring. eg. donkey, horse, mule.

Q
Naming Organisms
A
- Common names aren’t good for scientists working internationally as they’re different in different countries.
- Don’t show information about relationships with other organisms
- Binomial nomenclature; first word, genus second word, species
