10.5 Types of variation Flashcards
what is variation
the difference in characteristics between organisms
whats interspecific variations
variation between different species
whats intraspecific variation
variation within a species
what are two causes of variation
genetic and environmental
what are the genetic causes of variation
alleles, mutations, meiosis, sexual reproduction and chance
environmental causes of variation
can be affected by climate, diet, culture and lifestyle
variation caused by genetics and environmental
most variation is caused by both eg height and skin colour as many characteristics can be affected by both its difficult to draw conclusions about the type of variation for any particular case
how do alleles and mutations show genetic variation
alleles
genes have many alleles and depending on the parental combination of alleles the different alleles will be different in different offspring
mutations
changes to the dna sequence leads to changes in proteins and leads to changes in the physical and metabolical characteristics
how does meiosis, sexual reproduction and chance show genetic variation
meiosis
gametes are produced by meiosis and each gamete is different due to independant assortment and crossing over
sexual reproduction
offspring are produced from two parents and inherit genes from both its a random combination
chance
chance of which gametes fuse together through fertilisation
