10.4 Flashcards
Weathering?
Process of breaking down rocks into smaller fragments
Why’s are the two main types of weathering?
Chemical and physical
Physical weathering
Rocks are broken down by physical means , but do not change there composition
Chemical weathering
Chemical reactions causes rocks to break down, or decompose
Minerals in rock change there composition and rock becomes weaker
Biological weathering?
The process If physical or chemical weathering has been caused by a plant or animal
What can happen when rocks are broken down into smaller fragments
Pieces can be transported from there original location (erosion)
What are the main transporters of erosion
Water, glaciers, gravity , and wind
Deposition
The process I’m which eroded sediments and other materials are dropped or left by water or ice, creating built up land forms such as deltas and eskers
What directly affects how fast a rock will we weather?
The climate
Where is physical weathering the best in?
Climates with a lot of moisture in the air rain or snow, and where there are large temperature differences between summer and winter or between daytime and nighttime
Where is chemical weathering best?
Climates with high temperatures, a lot of rainfall, and high levels of pollution in the air
What’s another form of chemical weathering?
When plants die and decompose
Where chemical weathering take Place?
Underground
How do water droplets become acidic?
When rain water mixes with CO2 in the atmosphere or carbon from organic materials in the ground, forming a mild acid cal,Ed carbonic acid
Karst?
Area with many sinkholes
