5
Q

Is the salinity high near the equator? Why?

A

Yes because of high rates of evaporation

6
Q

Why would high rates of evaporation make the water saltier

A

When water in the ocean transforms into vapour in the air, it leaves the salt behind

7
Q

Where else is there high salinity in the world? Why?

A

Near the North Pole and South Pole because when water freezes and changes state, it also leaves salt behind

8
Q

Where is the salinity usually lower?why?

A

Near continents because the rivers empties into the ocean and dilutes the salt

9
Q

How did oceans become salty?

A

The salt comes from the water that has been running off the land for millions of years
As the water runs off the land, it picks up materials from the rocks (called dissolved solids)

10
Q

What’s another reason why the ocean became salty?

A

Underwater volcanic eruptions release large amounts of sulfur, fluorine, chlorine, and hydrogen
Eruptions on land release similar things which spew high into the atmosphere, these materials eventually fall into the oceans , or on the land which get carried to the ice a by run off

16
Q

Density?

A

Measure of the mass of a object of a given volume

17
Q

What is density measured in?

A

Kilograms per cubic meter

18
Q

Why is ocean water denser than salt water?

A

Because the amount of salt in ocean water

19
Q

What’s oceans waters density?

A

1027 kg/m3

20
Q

What is fresh waters density?

A

1000 kg/m3

21
Q

Why is oceans waters freezing point different than fresh waters?

A

Because ocean water contains far more dissolved solids than fresh water

22
Q

What’s salt waters freezing point

A

-1.9°
