10.1 Structure and distribution of vascular tissue Flashcards
transport, animals, plants, different distributions
what does the vascular tissue do
transports materials around the body.
In animals, the vascular tissue is blood
in plants it is xylem and phloem, found adjacent to each other in vascular bundles
They have different distributions in different parts of the plant
What is the function of the arrangement of Xylem and Phloem in roots
This arrangement resists vertical stresses and anchors the plant in soil.
What gives stems its flexble support and ability to resist bending
VASCULAR BUNDLES are in a ring at the periphery,
with the XYLEM towards the centre
and the phloem towards the outside
Why do plants have xylem
diffusion is too slow to distribute materials within plants instead xylem transports water and dissolved minerals and phloem transports sucrose and amino acids
What are 2 main types of cells in Xylem
-
Tracheids
- Found only in angiosperms
-
Vessels
- Found in ferns, conifers and angiosperms
what occurs only in angio sperms
- Lignin builds up in the cell walls of the vessels
- The contents die
- leaving an empty space
- The lumen
- As the tissue develops
- and the cell walls break down
- A long hollow tube is left
- through which water travels up the plant.
what is the empty space called
lumen
what are the 2 functions of a xylem
Xylem allows
The transport of water and dissolved materials
and
provides mechanical strength or support
what are the two types of conducting tissue in xylem
tracheids vessels
What is the structure of xylem and phloem in roots
- The xylem is central and star shaped
- Phloem is found between the groups of xylem cells

What is easier to see under a microscope Xylem or Phloem and why?
- Xylem
