10.1 Classification Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is classification?
The act of arranging organisms into groups based on their similarities and differences
What is taxonomy
The study of classification
What is a hierarchy?
A system which members of an organisation or society are ranked accordingly to relative status or authority
Who proposed the first hierarchical classification system?
Carl Linnaeus
What are the 8 taxonomic groups in order?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What is the acronym to remember the 8 taxonomic groups in order?
Dear King Phillip Came Over For Good Soup
Which of the 8 taxonomic groups was added last based on recent studies?
Domain
Define species
A group of similar organisms that can successfully breed together to produce fertile offspring
As you go down the taxonomic hierarchy what happens to the number of organisms?
There will be fewer organism in each group, but they will become more similar and share more of the same characteristics
What is the smallest group in the taxonomic hierarchy
Species
Why do scientists classify organisms?
-To identify species
-To predict characteristics, if several members in a group have a specific characteristic it is likely that another species in the group will have it too
-To find evolutionary links, species in the same group probably share characteristics because they have evolved from common ancestor
What are the 3 domains of classification?
Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya
What is the species name of humans?
Homo sapiens
Who created the nomenclature naming system?
Carl Linnaeus
How does the binomial nomenclature naming system work?
-All species have a scientific name in Latin consisting of two parts
-The first part of the name is the genus name (generic name)
-The second word indicates the organisms species (specific name)
What are the rules of the binomial naming system?
-Genus name is capitalised
-Lower case for species name
-Italics used, or underlined if handwritten
Why is binomial naming important?
-A species may have many different names all over the world, but the binomial scientific name will be unique and universal
-Genus shows close evolutionary relationships
