10.1 Flashcards
What is a structural isomer?
Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but a different structural formula. They normally have similar chemical properties but their physical properties may be slightly different.
What is a homologous series?
a series of compounds that can be grouped together based on similarities in their structure & reactions
Physical properties of homologous series
- physical properties of a homologous series change gradually as the length of the carbon chain increases
- as length & amount of carbon atoms increase, the boiling point increase
Empirical formula
the simplest ratio of atoms present in a molecules
Molecular formula
the actual number of atoms present in a molecules
Aliphatic compound definition
straight chain carbon compounds
Aromatic compounds definition
classes as arenes w ring structures consisting of alternating double & single carbon-carbon bonds
What are isomers?
compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structural formula
