1000ft View Psychology Flashcards
What is an FMRI and what does it evaluate?
Functional MRI, allows observation of brain functioning and will generate an activation map of the patients brain activities
What will an abnormality of the thalamus cause?
Unusual neurotransmission from the frontal cortex to the pre and post-central gyri (schizophrenia)
What structure within the limbic system will be smaller in schizophrenia?
Thalamus and Hippocampus
What will a smaller hippocampus create?
Abnormality of decreased cognitive functioning, especially socio-occupational function
In schizophrenia, how is the amygdala impacted?
Poor social judgements and facial recognition
What is within Brodman area #9
Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (short term memory, attention, reasoning)
What diseases are associated with functional loss of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex?
Major Depression
Schizophrenia
Autism
Bipolar
What areas of the brain will be dysfunctional on FMRI in anxiety?
Amygdala
Hippocampus
Thalamus
Prefrontal cortex
What substances are increased with ETOH?
Dopamine and serotonin
Where is serotonin made?
Raphe nuclei of the brainstem
What can low serotonin result in?
Depression
What are symptoms of excess in serotonin (serotonin syndrome)?
Shivering
Diarrhea
Muscle rigidity
Fever (high - 108)
Seizures
Irregular heartbeat
Agitation
High BP
What are symptoms of insufficiency in serotonin?
Depression
Anxiety
Pain sensitivity
Poor sleep
Difficulty concentrating
Carb craving
Constipation
What will prolonged stress result in desensitization of?
Desensitization of the stress response system (norepinephrine)
What two receptors are fighting for balance with ETOH use?
GABA (inhibitory) and Glutamate (excitatory)
