  • international phenomenon breaking all sales records (45 million to date)
  • it synthesized existing genres/styles: some songs soulful (the girl is mine), others slick funk-disco (billie jean), others funky heavy metal (beat it)
    => used his dynamism as artist to propel the album out with all this variety

allowed him to TRANSCEND boundaries between audiences (esp those that experts believed were unassailable)
= rapprochement between white rock and dance music

why: because he created them as if his songs were soundrtacks to small narratives, demonstrating his abilites as a performer rather than just a musician (moonwalk also significant visual aspect)

A

post-punk = the aftermath of punk, things that develpo from it

indie rock = variety of underground subgenres based on regional scenes and supported by netweork of fanzines, independent labels, college radio stations, and clubs in urban areas and college towns

scene: college age, post baby boomers wanted to distinguish selves from parents and older siblings = Im starting life finally, want to try new stuff, be different

indie = independent from what was going on in rest of culture

lively subgenre = hardcore
groups: black flag, the minutemen

black flag = humourous but also salacious/indecent
minutemen = what can be done in rock song in 60s or less

minneapolis = an active lcub scene!

A

No it really isnt! things like hardcore are sometimes synonyous with punk, sometimes not.

it can mean violence and hatred and frustration and speaking up for your beliefs and fighting whats wrng with teh world

= has the SPIRIT
= turning away from power, taking destiny into own hands, DIY alone
