What is the difference between listening and hearing?
listening is: active, intentional, conscious effort, connect and notice it
hearing is: passive, not paying full attention, background sound, not as much meaning
= noise!
What is the difference between sound and noise?
sound = agreeable tones, overground position, literacy to read music
noise = disagreeable/unpleasant, underground, dont need music reading ability
What is the origin of tin pan alley? Why this name?
- paper music was created
- music publishers set up offices in NYC area which was named tin pan alley (because the old rickeyty piano heard aroudn the area sounded lke banging on tin pan)
- exhange of music was first instance of music tech, kept music cistulating in this area
What was the main music stlye in the 1890s? What music came in at the time? Why did this become intriducef?
1890s = victorian-style ballads and waltz songs
came in = ragtime! by african american musicians
because TPA music required ACCESS to music, literacy, money so ragtime was adaptations of TPA music live

special because coud sing, dance, piano, compose/write! he brought his own culture into the happening-ness of TPA

He brought TPA music to unexpected, places like bars etc so they got takeen by more underground people and improvised it into ragtime

people like irbinf berlin and etfc were there! it was a big ol multicultural pile of immigrants and diverse people, and just a ot of them
= results in lots of interesting developments in culture and art

He wasnt prticularly amazing, but he gpt people in with his lyrics, his use of politics and events in his music, his incorporation of theatrical elements

Changes:
- music consumption was more from recordings than live performance
- now able to listen to whatever you want!
- classification system established = “popular” category for jazz and “classical”/”serious” for the white literate middle class urban residents
When was the Jazz Age? Who had biggest influence on jazz? What was jazz previously known as?
jazz age = 1920s-mid 1940s
influence = PAUL WHITEMAN and Guy Lombardo
called = syncopated dance music
What was so important about Paul Whiteman?
- king of jazz!
- music promoted as “symphonic jazz”
he ELEVATED jazz to a symphionic level using big band (jazz/swing) instrumentation and added orchestral strings and winds of classical
** revolutionary blend that appealed to many people, it was easy to dance to!
How did dance tie into the Jazz Age and Paul Whiteman?
PW’s symphonic jazz gave peopel a very easy thing to dance to SO he helped establish dancing in a popular context (rather than just a performance?)
specific dances were created that had basic steps that you could add fancy things into if desired, they were all named specifically
“give the dance to the public and it wll transform out of your hands”
