What are some causes of hypovolaemic shock?
Haemorrhage, or loss of water e.g. lack of intake, bowel hypersecretion from inflammation, diarrhoea
What are some causes of cardiogenic shock?
Myocarditis, dysrhythmia, valvular pathology
What are some causes of obstructive shock?
Thrombosis, tamponade, pneumothorax
What are some causes of distributive or vasodilatory shock?
Endotoxaemia, septicaemia, neurogenic
Why can’t you assess blood loss using PCV?
Splenic contraction from catecholamine release means PCV won’t drop for 24h
Which antibodies are most associated with transfusion reactions?
Anti-Aa and Anti-Qa
Which kind of horse do you find for a transfusion?
Not a TB, not a mare that has had a foal, ideally a gelding

Not the first
Why is sedation a good idea when collecting blood for transfusion?
Increases PCV
How do you find safe amount of blood to take?
Multiply weight by 0.016
What do you use to take the blood?
Large-bore catheter facing upwards (retrograde), with an in-line filter when giving
