we need units so we can consistently follow the same measurements.

What does the term standardized mean
Standardized means the value given to units which are scientifically determined and agreed upon by the international Community.
If a box weighs 12 grams should it still be 12 grams if it was weighed agin in another country
Yes It weighs the same amount of grams no matter how many times or where you weigh it.
What is the metric system of measurement based on
It is based on the power of 10.

It uses a base unit and adds prefixes to the base units that are bigger or smaller by powers of 10.
what are we gonna do in this chapter
We are gonna study the units of measurement in the metric system and also focus on converting measurements from the English system to the metric system
