10- Muscles Of Mastication Flashcards
Temporalis
Fan shaped, covers part of the temporal, frontal, and parietal bones.
Closes jaw, elevates and retracts mandible. Maintains position of mandible at rest.
Masseter
Covers lateral aspect of mandibular ramus.
Prime mover of jaw closure. Elevates mandible.
Medial pterygoid
Two headed muscle runs along internal surface of mandible and is largely concealed by that bone.
Synergist of temporalis and masseter muscles in elevation of the mandible. Acts with lateral pterygoid muscle to protrude mandible. Promotes grinding movement.
Lateral pterygoid
Deep, two headed, superior to medial pterygoid muscle.
Protrudes mandible. Provides forward sliding and side to side grinding movements of the lower teeth.
Buccinator
Trampoline like action . Keeps food between grinding surfaces of teeth during chewing.
