1.0 Materials - Metals Flashcards
What is the difference between ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals?
Ferrous metals contain Iron, are magnetic and can rust. Non-ferrous metals are not.
Name at least 3 non ferrous metals.
Aluminium, Copper, Lead, Zinc and Tin
Name 2 common ferrous metals.
Iron, steel.
Name 3 non ferrous alloys.
Brass, Bronze and duralumin
Stainless steel, High speed steel and Die (tool) steel all come under what category?
Ferrous alloys.
Mild steel is a ferrous metal. What are its properties?
Ductile, tough, easy to form and weld. Used in nuts, bolts and screws.
High carbon steel is a ferrous metal. What are its properties?
Hard and brittle. Good thermal and electrical conductivity. Used in tools - screwdrivers and chisels.
Cast iron is a ferrous metal. What are its properties?
Can be brittle if thin. Can be cast in a mold. Used in manhole covers and vices.
Aluminium is a non ferrous metal. What are some of its properties?
Lightweight and malleable, yet strong. Corrosion resistant. Used in bicycle frames.
Copper is a non ferrous metal. What are some of its properties?
Good conductor of electricity. Very malleable. Turns green when oxidised. Used in electrical wiring.
Zinc is a non ferrous metal. What are some of its uses?
Good heat conductivity. Used for galvanising (protecting metals such as steel)
Gold is a non ferrous metal. What are some of its properties?
Malleable, dense and very unreactive. Used in jewelry.
Silver is a non ferrous metal. What are some of its properties?
Corrosion resistant, soft and malleable when heated. Used in jewelry.
Titanium is a non ferrous metal. What are some of its properties?
Strong, lightweight and good strength. (used in drill bits)
Nitinol is a non ferrous alloy. What are some of its properties?
It is a shape memory alloy. Nickel and titanium.
