10 - disorders of the lens Flashcards
lens aging (nuclear sclerosis)
- lens fiber produced throughout life -> central portions become compressed -> hardening of lens nucleus
what are cataracts?
any opacity within the lens
(can be congenital, juvenile (young dogs), senile (6 yrs or older)
(cataracts - give name for each)
- less than 15% of lens opaque
- tapetal reflection still visible
- solid opacity of the lens and absence of a tapetal reflection
- liquefaction of lens cortex
- incipient
- immature
- intumescent
- hypermature
(cataracts - location within the lens)
(cataracts - causes)
- is it genetic/heritable?
- what metabolic dz causes?
3.
- yes - one of the most common causes in dogs
- DM
treatment for cataracts?
surgery!
(abnormalities of the zonular fibers - lens displacement)
(degree of dislocation)
- lens remains in the patellar fossa behind the iris = ?
- complete diplacement of the lens from teh patellar fossa
- anterior luxation predisposes to what?
- subluxation
- luxation
- glaucoma
(abnormalities of the zonular fibers - lens displacement)
anterior (anterior to plane of iris) or posterior (into viterous cavity)
(abnormalities of the zonular fibers - lens displacement)
(primary causes)
- due to degeneration of what?
- predisposed breeds?
- zonular fibers
- terriers
(abnormalities of the zonular fibers - lens displacement)
can also be secondary to other ocular disease
(abnormalities of the zonular fibers - lens displacement)
tx?
intracapsular lens extraction
