10 - Biodiversity Flashcards
species
a group of individuals which are able to interbreed to produce living, fertile offspring
order of taxa
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
role of courtship in species recognition
recognise members of their own species (to breed with and produce fertile species)
identify a mate capable of breeding (must be fertile)
form a pair bond that will lead to successful mating and raising of offspring
synchronise mating
species richness
measure of the number of different species in a community
index of diversity
describes relationship between the number of species in a community and the number of individuals in each species
techniques which have removed habitats and reduced species diversity
removal of hedgerows
creating monocultures
filling in ponds, marshes and wetlands
over-grazing of land (preventing regeneration of woodland)
use of pesticides and inorganic fertilisers
sampling bias
unrepresentative choices are made, either deliberately or unknowingly, making the results unreliable
chance
even if bias is avoided, by chance the sample may be unrepresnetative
