10-5 The Sun's Magnetic Fields Flashcards

1
Q

solar magnetic fields

A

sunspots are linked to intense magnetic fields. magnetic fields tend to expel charges outside of region, so no charges means no light

Q

the zeeman effect

A

spectral lines split into three lines are evidence of magnetic fields.

Q

helioseismology

A

helioseismology is the study of the sun through internal vibrations. it is a way in which the sun vibrates internally. regions moving outward are blue, and inward are red. solar rotation: red and yellow colorings denote faster motion, blue means slower motion. sunspots occur on boundaries between rotating regions

Q

babcock’s magnetic dynamo

A

differential rotation wraps a magnetic field around the sun. convection under the photosphere tangles the field, which rises through the photosphere, creating sunspots. the sunspot that appears first as the sun rotates has the same polarity as the sun’s magnetic pole in that hemisphere.
