10 Flashcards
Functional Area Information Systems
provides support for each department/ functional area and its own application programs or information systems. Increases each areas efficiency and effectiveness. Usually conveys information through reports.
Enterprise Resource Planning
systems designed to correct the lack of communication among functional area information systems.
Transaction
a business event that generates data worth being captured and stored in a database
Transaction Processing System
- Inputs for functional area information systems, business intelligence systems, and business operations.
- Supports the monitoring, collection, storage, and processing of data generated by each organizations basic business transaction.
- Examples include business operations such as customer relationship management, knowledge management, and e-commerce.
Source Data Automation
the process of organization’s automating Transaction Processing Systems data entries as much as possible.
Two ways transaction processing systems processes data
batch processing and online transaction processing
Batch Processing
data collected from transactions as they occur, and are placed into groups (batches). They system then prepares and processes the data periodically
Online Transaction Process
business transactions processed online as soon as they occur
Vendor Managed Inventory
supplier keep track of inventory and send out new shipments as needed. Eliminates the need for companies to send purchasing orders,

planning process that integrates production, purchasing, and inventory management of interdependent items. Deals only with production scheduling and inventories
Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II)
more complex than MRP, allocates related resources. Integrates all activities (pre evolution to ERP)
Computer Integrated Manufacturing
integrates various automated factory systems
Three goals of Computer Integrated Manfucaturing
- Simplify manufacturing techniques/technologies
- Automate as many manufacturing processes as possible
- Integrate and coordinate all aspects of design, manufacturing, and related functions via computer systems.
Product Life Cycle Management
strategy that enables manufacturers to share product related data that support both product design and development and supply chain operations
Employee Resource Planning
efforts to better manage employees for example call centers for employees problems.
