1. The Nervous System AO1 Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
A specialised network of cells and our primary communication system
What are the nervous systems two main functions?
- To collect, process and respond to information in the environment
- To coordinate the working of different organs and cells in the body
What is the NS split into?
- Central nervous system
2. Peripheral nervous system
What is the CNS made up of?
The brain and the spinal cord.
What is the role of the brain
It is the centre of all conscious awareness
What is the outer layer of the brain called?
Cerebral cortex
What is the cerebral cortex?
Highly developed in humans and is what distinguishes our higher mental functions from those of animals
What is the spinal cord?
An extension of the brain and is responsible for reflex actions
What does the CNS do?
Passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the peripheral nervous system
What does the PSN do?
Transmits messages via millions of neutrons to form the nervous system
What is the PNS subdivided into?
- Autonomic nervous system
2. Somatic nervous system
What does the ANS do?
Governs visual functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, sexual arousal and stress responses
What does the SNS do?
Controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors
Outline the order of the CNS
Human nervous system:
1. PNS 2. CNS 1A. ANS 1B. SNS 2A. Brain 2B. Spinal Cord
