Decreasing incidence

Risk increases with age

What causes it?
A
Ischaemic (thrombus in situ, thrombus in large vessels, cardioembolic)
Haemorrhagic (Berry aneurysm, ICH)

What risk factors are there?
A
FH >55 y/o HTN Diabetes Smoking Hyperlipidaemia

What signs may the patient have on examination?
A
Dysarthria
Facial paralysis
Abnormal neuro exam findings (reduced reflexes)
Cranial nerve palsies

How would you investigate?
A
CT head FBC ECG Echo Doppler USS

Q
What treatments are there?
A
Aspirin 300mg initially
Thrombolysis
Manage bp / bleeding (vitamin K infusion)
