1. Stoichiometric Relationships Flashcards
Compound
A pure substance when two or more elements combine chemically
Mixture
Two or more substances mixed together
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture that has the same composition throughout. It only consists of one phase, such as a solution or a mixture of gases
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture that does not have uniform composition and consists of separate phases
Relative atomic mass (Ar)
The average mass of the naturally occurring isotopes of the element relative to the mass of 1/12 of an atom of carbon-12
Relative molecular mass (Mr)
The mass of a molecule of the compound relative to the mass of 1/12 of an atom of carbon-12
Mole
The amount of substance that contains 6.02x10^23 particles
Empirical formula
The simplest whole number ratio of the elements present in a compound
Molecular formula
The total number of atoms of each element present in a molecule of the compound
