1) States of Matter and Mixtures Flashcards
whats it called when you change a solid to a liquid?
melting
whats it called when you change a liquid to a solid?
freezing
whats it called when you change a liquid to a gas?
evaporating
whats it called when you change a gas to a liquid?
condensing
whats it called when you change a solid to a gas?
subliming
why are chemical changes different to physical changes?
- bonds break
- substances change to form different products
what is a pure substance?
substance completely made up of a single element
what are mixtures?
substance with different elements like air
how can you use melting points test for purity?
- pure substances have specific melting points
- if a mixture it ill all melt at different points
how does simple distillation work?
- poor sample into sibilation flask
- heat
- lowest boiling point will evaporate first into condenser
- and collect in beaker
- good fo separating seawater
how does fractional distillation work?
- mixture in flask
- attach fractionating column
- heat
- different substances will boil at different points
- collect in testtubes
how does filtration work?
- place filter paper in funnel
- let run though
- leaving solid residue
how crystalisastion work?
- put solution in evaporating dish
- heat, water will evaporate
- once crystals start to form, remove from heat
- cool, more crystals will form
- filter crystals out of solution
how does paper chromatography work?
- draw line at bottom of paper and add drop of mixture
- put solvent into beaker, add paper but spot not touching solvent
- allow solvent to move up and separate out different chemicals
what will happen to pure substances in paper chromatography?
-wont sepoate, stay together
