1 Processes And Landforms Along Plate Boundaries Flashcards
(4) Classification of Landform
Aeolian Landforms
Erosional Landforms
Mountainous and Glacial Landforms
Fluvial and Coastal Landforms
are formed by the chemical and mechanical action of the wind.
Aeolian Landforms
are mounds or small hills made up of sand.
Dunes
A predominantly silt-sized sediment formed by the accumulation of windblown dust. It appears yellowish or brownish in color and it exhibits “cat steps”
Loess
also called rock pedestal, is a natural occurring rock that resembles the shape of a mushroom. Formed by earthquake or glacial action.
Mushroom Rock
created from exclusively erosional and weathering activities.
Erosional Landforms
also called table mountains. They are elevated areas of land with a flat top and sides that are usually steep cliffs.
Mesas
Almost similar to mesas as it has a flat topped hill and steep sides are formed in arid to semi-arid desert conditions. It covers a smaller amount of area
Buttes
Sometimes called “gorge” is a deep ravine between cliffs that is often carved from the landscape by a river, wind or glaciers.
Canyons
They rise higher than the rest of their surroundings.
MountainousLandforms
are controlled by geological processes that form them and continually act on them after their formation.
Volcanoes
Are elevated portions of land that are formed by geologic activities such as faulting. They are usually covered with grass and smaller than mountains.
Hills
Are low-lying areas of land situated between hills or mountains.
Valleys
Are the results of the actions of the glaciers. Glaciers are huge slow-moving bodies of ice.
Glacial Landforms
There are two main types of glaciers, namely:
alpine and continental
