1: Physiology: Beta Oxidation class notes Flashcards
1
Q
What is Beta Oxidation?
A
FAs are converted to numerous acetyl CoA molecules in presence of oxygen.
2
Q
Oxidation generates what?
A
reduced cofactors which are subsequently oxidized in the electron transport chain in the presence of oxygen to ultimately phosphorylate ADP to ATP.
acetyl CoA which can enter the TCA cycle or (in liver cells) be converted to ketones.
3
Q
Entry of FAs into the mitochondrion is by way of what?
A
by way of the carnitine transporter.
in liver cells, this transporter is potently inhibited by insulin and potently stimulated by glucagon.
4
Q
Beta Oxidation occurs where?
A
in the mitochondria
