1: Pathophysiology Basics + Medical History Flashcards
Health
complete state of physical/biological, mental & social well being
Disease
deviation from normal state of homeostasis
Manifestation of disease
signs and symptoms
Pathophysiology
study of functional changes in body as result of disease processes
Pathology
study of cause & effect of disease using laboratory study of cell&tissue changes
- for diagnosis of disease
How does pathophysiology include aspects of pathology
pathophys emphasizes HOW disease is developing
What are the 4 subspecialties of pathophysiology?
i) Experimental: investigates processes (think molecular genetics, tumors, cancer research etc.. )
ii) Anatomical: mordbid tissues -> biopsy (taken from living)
iii) Clinical: investigates and analyzes data(ie.: lab work)
iv) Forensic: investigates criminal or sudden/unexpected deaths
What are some things medical history lets us look at?
helps understand pathophysiology of current condition
looks at:
current/prior illness
allergies
hospitalizations
therapy or drugs
*establish overal pic of health situation/stay
3 major parts of health history
- Patient complaint: why here?
- Health Care Provider Assessment: vital, questions
- Ongoing updated info: record of change/stay, lab work done afterwards etc..
Gross level
changes at organ or system level
*microscopic level impacts gross level
Microscopic level
changes at cellular level
Biopsy
excision of small amounts of LIVING tissue
- mirco change
Autopsy
examination of body and organs AFTER death
