1-Overview of Nutrition in Life Cycle Flashcards
10 principles of nutrition concept
- Food is basic human needs
- Food provide energy, nutrients, and other substances needed for growth and health
- Health problems related to nutrition is coming from the cells
- inadequate nutrition and excessive nutrients can results to poor nutrient intake
- Human have adaptive mechanism for balancing fluctuation in food intake
- Malnutition comes from poor diets and from disease states, genetic factors, or combination of these causes
- Some groups of people are at higher risk of becoming inadequately nourished than others
- Poor nutrition -> develop certain chronic diseases
- adequacy, variety, and balne are characteristic of healthy diet
- no good or bad foods
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Base : air water food shelter reproduction
1st level : safety and security
2nd level: Love and Belongings
3rd level: Truth Justice Beauty self-sufficiency
4th level: Self-actualization
6 categories of nutrients
Carbohydrates Proteins Fats Vitamins Minerals Waters
9 variations of essential nutrients
Age Body sie Gender Genetic traits Growth Illness Physical activity Medication Pregnancy and Lactations
Characteristics of normal cell health and functions
Maintained wen optimal nutritional and environmental condition exist within and around cells
Poor nutrition comes from _____ or _____ nutrients intake
inadequate or excessive
Adaptive mechanism for human balance
Homeostasis mechanism (Positive and Negative Feedbacks)
Define what is Primary Malnutrition and Secondary Malnutrition
Primary Malnutrition : Results when a poor nutritional state in dietary in origin
Secondary Malnutrition : Precipitate by disease, surgical procedure, or medication
Groups that are at higher risk of becoming inadequate
Pregnant and Lactating Women
Infants
Children
Elderly
Chronic diseases that can influence of poor nutrition
Heart Disease and Hypertension
Bad habits that cause Heart Disease?
Eat too much trans fat, added sugar, and salt
Low intake of vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, and whole grain
Eat too many calories that cause excess body fat
Bad habits that cause Hypertension?
Eat too much sodium Low Potassium intake Consume Alcohol in an excessive amount Low vegetables and fruits Excessive levels of body fat
Characteristics of Healthy dietary pattern is
Consume moderate portions of variety of foods from each basic food groups
Several cause of Dietary considerations are
Ethnicity and Religion
17 Sustainable Development goals
No Poverty Zero Hunger Good Health and Well-Being Quality Education Gender Equality Clean Water and Sanitation Moderate and Clean Energy Decent work and Economic growth Industry, Innovation and infrastructure Reduced Inequalities Sustainable cities and communities Responsible consumption and production Climate action Life Below water Life on land Place, justice and strong instructions Partnership's for the goals
Explain UNICEF’s conceptual frameworks on the Determinants of Maternal and Child Nutrition
The Government could include political, financial, social, and public, and private sectors to enable children’s and women’s right to nutrition which enables sufficient resources and positive social & cultural norms and action. Next, the underlying determinants which are food, feeding, and environments will be affected. Then domino effect will be done to good diets and good care that finally affect the Maternal and Child nutrition which could improve the survival rate, health, physical growth, cognitive development, school readiness, and school performance in children and adolescents. Which finally could improve prosperity and cohesion in societies
Define Nutrition-specific interventions during Birth, 0-5 months, and 6-23 months
Birth: Initiation of breastfeeding within one hour (colostrum)
0-5 months: Exclusive breastfeeding, need counseling and lay support from the community and facility-based contacts
6-23 months: Continued breastfeeding & Timely, adequate, and appropriate complementary feeding
Define Nutrition-sensitive interventions during Birth, 0-5 months, and 6-23 months
Birth: Kangaroo Care
0-5 months: Maternity protection in the workplace
6-23 months: improved use of locally available foods for infants (improved food access)
