1: Nucleosides and nucleotides Flashcards
What are nucleosides made of?
Base and sugar
What are nucleotides made of? And what are they?
Base, sugar and nucleotide
A phosphorylated nucleoside
Two types of nucleotides
Purines(AG) and pyrimidines(CTU)
How can purines be synthesized?
Synthesized de novo or salvaged from cells and food
What is produced from the breakdown of purines?
Uric acid
2 diseases caused by purine metabolism
Adenosine deaminase deficiency:
inherited immune deficiency disease, low levels of T and B lymphocytes
Gout:
excess uric acid in tissues and joints crystallises
Why are nucleotides important?
-makes DNA and RNA
-anti-viral/ anti-cancer drugs may interfere with nucleotide breakdown
-plays central role in metabolism(sources of chem E, cofactors of enzyme reactions)
