1. Metabolic Pathways and their Control - Membranes Flashcards
1
Q
What is the membrane structure?
A
a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins
2
Q
What are the three types of membrane proteins and their functions?
A
Pores which allow diffusion, pumps which move molecules against their concentration gradient and enzymes which catalyse reactions at the membrane
3
Q
What do metabolism compartments do?
A
They localise metabolic activity and the high surface to volume ratio of small compartments allows high concentrations and high reaction rates
