1 L2 Ions, Fluids, Gradients, Channels Flashcards
What are the 3 important properties of ion channels
Selectivity - Gating - Conductance
Define selectivity of ion channels
Allowing only specific ions or types to transit
Define conductance of ion channels
How many ions can cross per unit of time
Define gating of ion channels
External influences may act on a channel to cause a change in conductivity e.g. mechanical, chemical, electrical
What is ion flux through a channel measured in
Electrical current
True or False- Conductance can only be linear
False- Conductance can be linear or non-linear
True or False- Carriers are open to both ICF and ECF at the same time
False- Typically they are only open to 1 at a time
What are the 2 types of secondary active transporters
Symporters and Antiporters
Describe a symporter
Moves 2 substances in the same direction- 1 down it’s concentration gradient, 1 against it’s concentration gradient
Describe an antiporter
Moves 2 substances in the opposite direction- 1 down it’s concentration gradient, 1 against it’s concentration gradient
What are the 4 main kinds of ion channel gating
Chemical - Voltage - Mechanical - Phosphorylation
