1. Intro To Human Bio Flashcards
What are cells?
Cells are the smallest structural and functional unit that make up the human body.
How many cells make up the human body?
75 trillion cells
What are the levels of organisation?
Cells>Tissue>Organs>Organ System>Organismal Level
Define tissue?
Tissues are a group of cells with similar structure and function.
Define Organs?
Organs are made of different tissues which perform a collective function.
Define Organ System?
Organ systems are made of different organs working together to perform collective function.
Provide three examples for each of the level of organisation
Cell - red blood cells, white blood cells and smooth muscle cell
Tissue - muscle tissue, nervous tissue and epithelial tissue
Organ - heart, lungs and kidneys
Organ system - respiratory system, skeletal system and cardiovascular system
Describe 3 inter-relationships between these systems in this diagram
- Digestive system supplies the circulatory system with nutrients which supplies other organs
- The respiratory system passes O2 into, and CO2 out of the circulatory system
- Integumentary system protects and encapsulates the other organ systems
List 5 things cells need to be able to do
- Get Nutrients
- Get energy
- Grow
- Waste Removal
- Reproduce
List 5 things cells need to have
- Glucose
- Correct pH
- O2
- Correct Temperature
- Water
Define cell specialisation
Cell specialisation is when a basic cell goes through diffentiation to become a cell with more specific stucture and function.
