#1: Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
process of maintaining relatively constant internal conditions
adjusts to enviro conditions to maintain stable internal conditions
maintained using homeostatic control systems
Sensor
detects when homeostasis has been disturbed and sends a message to the integrator
Integrator
relays information to appropriate regulator / effector
Effector
acts to restore normal balance
Negative Feedback Systems
Response reduces initial stimulus
When body goes outside its normal range, body takes action to return to its optimal range
Examples of Negative Loop
body temp
Positive Feedback Systems
Response increases initial stimulus
Move the variable even further away from steady state (ideal range)
Not useful for maintaining homeostasis
Examples of Positive Loop
Labour - oxytocin released and intensifies/speeds up contractions
increase in contractions causes more oxytocin to be released until baby is born
