1. Genetics Overview Flashcards
What is EIC?
Exercise induced collapse. Where affected dogs become weak in the hind limbs and collapse after 5-20 mins of high intensity exercise. An inherited as an autosomal recessive.
What gene is common in labs that increases risk of obesity?
Variant of POMC gene associated w/ weight and appetite. 23% of labs carry >1 copy of variant.
gene involved w/ hunger recognition and feeling of being full after eating. Carrying varient may make dogs more food motivated
What are genetics concerned with?
storage of biological info
how info is expressed + regulated
how its transmitted from parent -> offspring
how that info is altered
What are genes?
gene = hereditary unit
an info storage unit that can be replicated, expressed, regulated and transmitted
made up of DNA and organized into chromosomes. diff regions of chr. represent diff hereditary units
What is genotype vs phenotype?
genotype - genetic makeup, the particular gene associated w/ given characteristic/trait
Phenotype - observable physical or biochemical characteristic. Determined by both genetic makeup + enviro influences. Ex. a breed is a group sharing particular phenotype
Genotype determines phenotype
What is the difference btw mitosis and meiosis?
Mitosis - genetic material is duplicated and distributed to 2 new nuclei during normal cell growth
Meiosis - process HALVES the amount of genetic material in a cell, generally in formation of gametes for sexual repro
Define mutation
altering of DNA
define chromosomes
packages of genes
define genetic map
how genes are organized on a chromosome
define genetic selection
selection of parents as breeding stock on the basis of a certain inherited characteristic
define breed
a group of related animals who are genotypically and phenotypically similar enough to prod similar offspring when mated together
