1 Diaphragm Flashcards
Shape of diaphragm ?
dome
what does diaphragm divide ?
thoracic cavity from abdominal cavity
What does the marked dome of the diagram mean ?
thoracic cavity is much smaller than the bony thorax would suggest
Why is the fact that the marked dome of the diaphragm mean that the thoracic cavity is much smaller than the bony thorax would suggest, clinically relevant ?
penetrating chest injuries of the lower chest can injure abdominal organs (e.g. liver, splee n, parts of the stomach, upper kidneys)
Where does the right and left dome of the diaphragm lie ?
right - level of 5th rib
left - slightly lower at level of 5th intercostal space
What 2 things does the diaphragm consist of ?
peripheral muscular part & a central tendon
the peripheral muscular part is made up by what ?
- vertebral part
- costal part
- sternal part
vertebral part of peripheral muscular part arises from what ligaments ?
crura & arcuate
what are the crura of the diaphragm ?
strong tendons attached to the antero - lateral surfaces of the upper 3 lumbar vertebral bodies
- where does right crus arise from ?
- where does left crus arise from ?
- bodies & IV discs of L1,2&3
- L1 & 2
What are the arcuate ligaments ?
thickenings of fascia
Over which muscles do the following arcuate ligaments thicken ?
1. middle
2. lateral
- psoas muscle
- quadratus lumborum muscle
Where does the costal part of the structure arise from ?
inner aspects of 7th to 12th costal cartilages
where does the sternal part of the structure arise from ?
deep surface of the xiphisternum
Diaphragm has openings for what at what levels ?
- IVC (T8)
- oesophagus (T10)
- aorta (T12)
