1. Congenital anomalies Flashcards
1
Q
Types of congenital anomalies
A
- Renal agenesis
- Renal hypoplasia
- Ectopic kidney
- Horseshoe kidney
2
Q
Renal agenesis is due to
A
- Lack of metanephric primordial
- Failure of ureteric bud formation
- Failure of contact of ureteric bud & metanephros
3
Q
Bilateral renal agenesis
A
- Incompatible with life, rare
- Male : female = 25.1 : 1
- Stillborn
4
Q
Unilateral renal agenesis
A
- Male : Female = 2:1
- Opposite kidney usually enlarged due to compensatory hypertrophy
- Some eventually develop progressive glomerulosclerosis in the remaining kidney due to adaptive changes in hypertrophied nephrons
5
Q
Renal hypoplasia
A
- Small kidney with reduced number of lobules & calyces
(<5; normal >10)
- Histologically: primitive glomeruli & tubules in dense fibrous or fatty interstitium
- Usually unilateral; if bilateral, results in renal failure in early childhood - Renal hypoplasia with oligomeganephronia (kidney small with hypertrophied glomeruli)
6
Q
Ectopic kidney
A
- Abnormal positions of the kidney:
- Just above pelvic brim
- Within the pelvis - Complications: Kinking or tortuosity of ureters, leading to urinary tract obstruction
7
Q
Horseshoe kidney
A
- Fusion of lower (90%) or upper (10%) poles
- 1 in 500 to 1 in 1000 incidence
- Complications: Urolithiasis
